Research Design & Analysis Workshops
Education Commons offers a variety of Research Design and Analysis workshops led by Â鶹´«Ã½¼¯ÍÅ (OISE) statistical consultant Olesya Falenchuk.
The Research Design & Analysis Workshops aim to help participants achieve specific learning outcomes. These outcomes may include:
- developing design and methodology for graduate theses and research projects;
- developing and validation of surveys, questionnaires and measurement scales;
- conducting qualitative and quantitative data analysis;
- communicating results (including tables, charts, and graphs) for research reports and peer-reviewed publications.

- Synchronous workshops are held on Zoom from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm EST.
- Customized workshops can be offered to research groups of five or more people.
- SAS, Stata, SPSS, Amos, HLM, NVivo, Atlas.ti.
- No refunds. Cancellations with 48 hours notice can be rescheduled to a future date at no charge.

Qualitative Data Analysis
Dedoose is a cloud-based software for analysis of qualitative and mixed data, such as transcripts of in-depth interviews, focus groups and field notes, data from electronic web surveys, audio, and video data. The web-based nature of this software allows collaborations of the researchers across different platforms (PC and Mac) in real time.
The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to Dedoose software, discuss the key points for efficient use and teamwork, as well as to provide participants with an opportunity to acquire some hands-on experience. Specifically, the participants will learn how to link their data to Dedoose, code qualitative data, manage quantitative data, and explore the patterns and trends in the findings with a variety of visual tools.
This workshop is appropriate for beginner researchers with no previous knowledge of Dedoose as well as those who would like to expand their knowledge and skills with this software.

NVivo 12 is a software package for analysis of qualitative data, such as transcripts of in-depth interviews, focus groups and field notes, data from electronic web surveys, audio, video, and social media data.
The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to the NVivo 12 Suite, discuss the key differences between different versions of this software, as well as to provide participants with an opportunity to acquire some hands-on experience. Specifically, the participants will learn how to prepare their text and media data for analyses with NVivo 12, import and organize their data in NVivo, add research notes while analyzing the data, and code qualitative data in a variety of different ways.
This workshop is appropriate for beginner researchers with no previous knowledge of NVivo as well as those who would like to expand their knowledge and skills with this software.

This workshop is appropriate for researchers with limited knowledge of NVivo 12 as well as those who would like to expand their knowledge of its capabilities.

The focus of this workshop is the management and analysis of audio, video and survey data in NVivo.
Many researchers these days collect their data through online survey tools like Survey Monkey, Fluid Surveys and Survey Wizard. These surveys often include a mixture of quantitative and qualitative (open ended) responses. NVivo offers a set of tools for analyses of such data.
The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to the features of NVivo software that allow analyzing survey data in an efficient and convenient way. In addition, the participants will learn how to transcribe and code media data in NVivo.
This workshop is appropriate for researchers with limited knowledge of NVivo 12 as well as those who would like to expand their knowledge of its capabilities.
Taking NVivo Part 1 and 2 workshops is strongly recommended for those who consider attending this workshop.

Quantitative Data Analysis - SPSS
The focus of this workshop to introduce researchers to the SPSS syntax mode and its effective use and to give them hands-on experience with a wide range of data cleaning and data management functions, and data transformation techniques.
By the end of this workshop the participants will be equipped with the tools to enter or import their data into SPSS, organize the data dictionary/codebook, and prepare the data for further analyses.
This workshop will benefit SPSS novices as well as researchers who want to learn about more effective uses of the program features.

This course will guide the participants through the fundamentals of using SPSS for exploratory data analysis.
Participants will learn the basics of exploratory data analysis with SPSS for examination of single variables and pairs of variables, and formatting and exporting SPSS outputs for the effective presentation of results. The basics of using SPSS will be demonstrated and discussed.
This workshop is appropriate for researchers who have some experience with SPSS, but want to learn about its capabilities and effective use.

The General Linear Model (GLM) is a flexible statistical tool underlying most statistical techniques used in educational and social research: t-tests, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), repeated-measures ANOVA and many of the multivariate methods.
This workshop will briefly introduce the main concepts of general linear models, application of these models to social research data and interpretation of the results. A wide range of GLMs will be illustrated with many examples.
The focus of this workshop is the practical application of GLMs using SPSS with minimal emphasis on statistical theory. Participants are expected to have working knowledge of SPSS and statistics.

This workshop will discuss and review a variety of aspects of multiple regression analysis including the formulation of regression problems, interactions, dummy variables, methods of selecting predictors, checking assumptions, estimating model coefficients, collinearity issues and residual analysis.
The main focus of this workshop is practical, with an emphasis on running multiple regression analyses using SPSS and interpreting the results from SPSS output.

The focus of this workshop is discussion and review a variety of aspects of binary logistic regression, ordinal regression and multinomial regression analyses as well as performance of these analyses in SPSS and interpretation of the results.
Issues discussed include assumption checking and diagnostics, interactions, methods of selecting predictors, estimation of model coefficients, collinearity issues and residual analysis.

The course will guide participants through the fundamental concepts of principal component analysis (PCA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA).
Participants will learn about conceptual and analytic similarities and differences, as well as the applications of the PCA and EFA techniques. This workshop offers hands-on experience on running SPSS analyses for these techniques and on interpreting the SPSS outputs.
It is appropriate for researchers who have some experience with SPSS, but want to expand their knowledge of using this software for running advanced statistical analyses.

Quantitative Data Analysis - Stata
The focus of this workshop is to introduce researchers to the Stata syntax mode and its effective use, and to give them hands-on experience with a wide range of transformation techniques and helpful data management features, including ways to automate their work with quantitative data, manipulate their data files and results, and export outputs to other computer programs.
This workshop will benefit Stata novices as well as researchers who want to learn about more effective uses of the program features.
