Dr. Samuel Sambasivam Publishes Multiple Articles on Disaster, Risk, and Disease
One of the College of Liberal Arts’ most prolific professors is also its newest, Dr. Samuel Sambasivam, professor and chair of the Computer Science Data Analytics program. In 2021, he published four academic papers with topics ranging from an analysis of 鈥渂ig data and information security risk management effectiveness鈥� to a comparative study on information technology infrastructure and disaster recovery methodology.
His work showcases the many ways data science is the lifeblood of all businesses, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), governmental entities, and other projects, and thus a viable career choice for data analytics students. 鈥淒ata-driven decisions increasingly make the difference between keeping up with the competition or falling further behind,鈥� Dr. Sambasivam explains. 鈥淢achine learning can be the key to unlocking the value of corporate and customer data and enacting decisions that keep a company ahead of the competition.鈥�
Dr. Sambasivam鈥檚 work also explores the intersections between machine learning and data science. He explains that one reason he finds machine learning exciting is because it is 鈥渢he core subarea of artificial intelligence. It makes computers get into a self-learning mode without explicit programming. When fed new data, these computers learn, grow, change, and develop by themselves.鈥� This understanding informed his article on a topic we鈥檙e all thinking about these days: flu forecasting. The study uses data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Twitter data. 鈥淚n data science, there is no shortage of cool stuff to do the shiny new algorithms to throw at data,鈥� Dr. Sambasivam says. 鈥淢achine learning is a necessary partner for this exploration. It helps explain why things work.鈥�
